This may be in-tended for Venus, or some character of thelate seventeenth or early eighteenth century,when this ware was made. Here is a roughillustration of this example; the W. (two chargerson one block). 92. c,;r I., |..,;, .,.• ADAM AND EVE DESIGNS Though there appear to be rather morechancers with tlie tulip design than there arewith Adam and Eve, yet the lists of collectionsgiven later on in this book will be found tocontain nearlv ninety examples, though thisnumber may include a few in the hands ofdealers, Dr Glaisher and Mr Wakefieldhaving the greatest number among are but few examples ])ainted withother religious subjects. On most of those with Adam and Eve thereis a tree with fruit, this fruit as a rule beingyellow or orange in colour, and probably re-presenting the pomegranate, as some examplesof this ware have the pomegranate only astheir design. Many years ago I regarded thisfruit as the orange, and so suggested that itwas a skit or play on the word in connectionwith William of Orange.
