In1859 he entered Bowdoin College, and graduated fromthat institution in 1862. He was engaged in teachingschool winters from 1855 to 1861 ; was clerk in the Secre- tary of States office at Augusta in the winter of after graduation took charge of Oswego Insti-tute, a school of the Friends Society near Poughkeepsio,N. Y., and remained there till April, 1863. In August ofthat year he commenced .studying law with Hon. L. D. , of Portland, and coutinued with liini and Vinton &. .JOEL M. MARSUALL. Dennett until his admission as a member of the CumberlandCounty bar in May, 1865. In November, 1865, he formed a law-partnership withHon. Charles E. Weld, of Buxton, and continued in prac-tice with him until May, 1870. In 1866 he was appointed assistant assessor of UnitedStates Internal Revenue, and attended to the duties ofthat office until his resignation in 1870. He was townagent, selectman, and assessor of the town in 1869-70, andwas a member of the supervising school committee from1866 to 1872, inclusive. On June 23, 1870, he married Miss Ellen C. Meserve,a teacher of the public schools of La Crosse, Wis., whowas also a native of Buxton. In 1873 he was delegated to compile the historicalsketches of Buxton furnished by Hon. Cyrus Woodmanand others, and to complete the Revolutionary record ofthe town, and report and publish the proceedings of itscentennial c
