View E of doorway of late Medieval/Tudor well house at Dupath, Cornwall, dedicated to St Dominick: built c 1500 over an ancient spring believed to cure whooping cough. Spring rises to S of chapel, enters under threshold, flows along a shallow stone gutter and falls out through the E wall into a circular stone basin under the window. Probably built by the canons of St Germans, it may have served as a baptistery. The walls are built of granite blocks, the roof of overlapping moor stone slabs. Folklore tells of a duel on the site between two Saxon suitors: wealthy Gotlieb (the father's choice) and poor knight Sir Colan (the lady's favourite): Colan won but both died.
