In this modernization tVvO radically new procedures were applied. One was the design and construction of new types of apparatus which would allow a greater research output at less expense, and the other was the study of the energy expended by the animal organism not only when subsisting on different nutritive planes, but also during a limited fast when its digestive apparatus was not filled with food. It was at this stage that the initiative, the vision, and the experi- ence of a great scientist came in to give research in animal nurition a rational scientific trend. With his usual prompt decision.
