He was amember of the board of overseers of Harvard College in 1850-54, serving forone year as its secretary. Harvard gave him the degreeof D. D. in 1857, and that of LL. D. in 1883. Mr. Elliswas the third person who has recei\-ed both these degreesfrom Harvard.
