Netherlands/Indonesia: Herman Willem Daendels (21 October 1762 - 2 May 1818), the 36th Governor General of the Dutch East Indies (r. 1808-1811). Oil on canvas painting by Raden Saleh Syarif Bustaman (1811-1880), 1838. Herman Willem Daendels was a Dutch soldier who became Governor General of the Dutch East Indies. After heavy criticism of his leadership, he was replaced in 1811, and became an officer in the French army under Napoleon. King William I of the Netherlands then appointed Daendels Governor-General of the Dutch Gold Coast on the west coast of Africa, where he would die of malaria.
