An old engraving demonstrating using a condensing or pneumatic syringe. It is from Victorian book of the 1890s on sports, games and pastimes. A pneumatic (or fire) syringe demonstrated that, when air is rapidly condensed or compressed, its temperature rises markedly. Here an air-tight piston or barrel within a glass tube is plunged downwards. A few thrusts will quickly increase the temperature at the base of the tube. If a small piece of ‘guncotton’ is placed at the base, it will ignite and start to burn.
