Tuna boat "La Vieux Copain" moored by Quai Alexandre III in the Bassin du Commerce, Cherbourg, Normandy, France

“La Vieux Copain” was built in 1940 in Sables d'Olonnes for a fisherman from the island of Île d'Yeu, who used her for tuna fishing and for trawl net fishing during the winter until his retirement. She was sold 1974. Then she had a 2-year expedition to the North Atlantic, where she was used as a base for scientific surveys. When she came home the ship was abandoned: retired and forgotten in the mouth of the river Trieux. In May 1983, she was purchased by Serge Le Joliff at the symbolic price of 1 Franc. The ship underwent a thorough overhaul and restoration that lasted 6 years, being converted to a passenger sailing ship. She was used in the charter business sailing daytrips and weekend long voyages along the coast of Brittany from her home port of Paimpol.
