Shrubberies are rare ornaments of avillage, but this sets a pretty foreground to the low line ofwhitened cottages behind it. Shalford Common is wide and breezy ; geese cackle over itsgrass, and you may see more than one cricket match beingplayed on holiday afternoons. Once, in 1877, eleven Mitchellsplayed eleven Heaths on the common ; the Heaths were all ofthe same family, but the Mitchells, though related, were Shalfo7-d. But the greatest tradition of Shalford Common is its connectionwith a Bedfordshire man, John Bunyan. Bunyan is said tohave lived in two houses in Surrey, a cottage on Quarry Hillin Guildford, and at Horn Hatch, now pulled down, on ShalfordCommon. Probably the tradition would not have grown upwithout good ground ; there is one possible reason, at all events,for connecting Bunyan with this part of Surrey. The idea ofPilgrims Progress is said to have been suggested to him bythe very Pilgrims Way, and Vanity Fair to be the fair heldon the meadow between Shalford and Guildford below VIII THE COURT OF DUSTY-FKET 97 St. Catherines Chapel.
