All that remains of this sandstone Buddha statue is the head. It is entwined within the roots of a bodhi (bo) tree at Wat Phra Mahathat, Ayuthaya, in northern Thailand. It is fitting that the head is beneath a bodhi tree as this was the tree that the Lord Buddha sat beneath to receive enlightenment. The head in its current position was caused by the encroaching jungle before the site’s restoration.
