These early Airfix kits were designed for railway modellers and were really well designed. There were just over two dozen different models in the series, covering buildings and trackside items like telegraph poles, signals and bridges. The range began in 1957 and this kit was released the following year. The longevity of railway modelling ensured these models remained in production for almost 30 years, before Airfix sold the moulds off and they continue to be made under a different name to this day (albeit in terrible packaging!).
