Deep shell with KUFI inscription. In the Persian Samaniden Empire (873-999), highest impressive shells were created with inscriptions. The letters always lift themselves by contrasting from the ground. Mostly the vessel body is covered with a white clay slip. The shell shown here, however, carries a manganese-brown primer with a blessing in Kufische Scripture. The successful distribution of the white letters reveals that the potter for the decor followed a design. Acquired by Campe Historical Art Foundation
