When 12 years ofage, and after he had worked a yearand a half at the carpenters trade,he removed with an uncle, WillisOglesby, into whose care he hadbeen committed, to Decatur, thisState, where he continued liis ap-prenticeship as a mechanic, working six months forHon. E. O. Smith. In 1844 he commenced studying law at Spring-field, with Judge Silas Robbins, and read with himone year. He was admitted to the Bar in 1845, andcommenced the practice of his chosen profession atSullivan, the county seat of Moultrie County. The next year the war with Mexico was com-menced, and in June, 1846, Mr. Oglesby volunteered,was elected First Lieutenant of Co. C, Fourth IllinoisRegiment of Volunteers, and participated in the bat-tl
