People browsing and buying from market stalls at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival
Tourist browsing and buying from tented market stalls on the Royal Mile at the 2009 Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland. The Edinburgh festival began as a post war initiative to reunite Europe through culture. At that time 8 uninvited theatre companies turned up and fended for themselves. A critic the following year dubbed the gatecrashers' enterprise - the fringe of the official festival drama - and the name and spirit of the fringe was born.
