The Alleghany range of Penn-sylvania and Virginia becomes the CumberlandTable-land in Tennessee and the Sand Moun-tain in Alabama. The Blue Ridge of Pennsyl-vania, Virginia, and North Carolina takes thename of Unaka or Smoky Mountains in Ten-nessee. The long,itraight valleys lying between the many parallelridges and overlooked by them, but open to thenortheast and southwest, are often rich, popu-lous, and beautiful — centres of industry, intelli-gence, and a diversified system of the State altogether it will be seen thatthe topography is greatly diversified by moun-tains and valleys, hills and dales, rocky heightsand broad plateaus. The great elevations onthe east are offset by the low valley of the Mis-sissippi River on the west. Betw-een these arethree great plateaus and two marvelously fruit-ful valleys all differing in height, area, soils,climate, and productions.
