Hungarian woman prepares to tip cauldron of hot soup over attacking Ottoman Turks during 1552 Siege of Eger. Detail of a large relief beside the main gateway and public entrance to Eger Castle, Eger, Heves County, Hungary.

Eger, Heves County, Hungary: women fighting alongside their menfolk in the heroic 1552 Siege of Eger are said to have tipped a cauldron of hot soup from the castle ramparts over attacking Ottoman Turk soldiers trying to scale the walls with ladders. The incident is depicted in this close detail of a large relief beside the main gateway and public entrance to the castle. The women’s exploits have also been immortalised in musical verse, a poem, an historical novel, a feature-length film and the 1867 painting ‘Women of Eger’ by the Romantic artist Bertalan Székely.
