Long line insertion, illustration. Long line catheters are inserted into veins (blue) and are typically used for long-term use. They are also known as central lines. Examples are peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC) that are inserted into the arm, as shown here. Long lines are inserted to allow access to the larger veins in the body's torso. A PICC is also known as a percutaneous indwelling central catheter.
