Predicted path of the 1724 solar eclipse. Historical chart showing the predicted passage of the shadow of the moon, caused by the solar eclipse of 11th May 1724. The shadow (shaded band) passes through Ireland (upper left), southern England, France, Switzerland, and northern Italy (lower right). This map was produced by John Senex (1678-1740) based on the calculations of Edmond Halley (1656-1742). Halley's calculations were inaccurate as the actual path of the eclipse differed by about 25 miles. Publications like this (broadsides) were intended to make astronomical events accessible to everyday people, and to publicise the work of the scientists and publishers involved.
