Fractional distillation apparatus. Distillation involves slowly boiling a liquid mixture to boil off a liquid component known as the distillate. The condenser (upper centre) is cooled by water, causing the distillate to condense and be collected in the conical flask (centre right). If there are several liquid components in the mixture with different boiling points, a more complex process employs what is called a fractionating column (down left). An electric heater is being used to obtain more control over the heating. For a simpler distillation apparatus, see C010/9641.
