Archaeopteryx. Fossil of Archaeopteryx lithographica, a crow-sized flying reptile with feathers. The bones are surrounded by feathers (rippled areas). Eleven specimens of Archaeopteryx have been found, all from the Solenhofen limestones of the late Jurassic period (195-135 million years ago), in Bavaria, Germany. Archaeopteryx shows that birds evolved from dinosaurs. The claws seen on its wings are a combined reptilian and avian characteristic. This is the London Specimen, discovered in 1861.
