Cyrus West Field was born at Stockbridge, Massa-chusetts, November 30, 1819. He was the son of Rev,David Dudley Field, a distinguished clergyman. He wascarefully educated, and at the age of fifteen went to NewYork to seek his fortune. He had no difficulty in obtaining aclerkship in an enterprising mercantile house, and, from the first,gave evidence of unusual business capacit). His employers advanced himrapidly, and in a few years he became a partner.
