Reid believed further, and his viewis very generally accepted, that eachtuft, in projecting into the placentalcavity, pushed before it the lining mem-brane of this cavity, so that each foetalvillus had a special maternal is to be observed, however, that amongEnglish physiologists, Dr. A. Farrecombats this view, and that both Costeand Robin are opposed to it. They be-lieve that the walls of the uterine vesselsare eroded and perforated by the villi,so that the walls of the latter are in di-rect contact with the blood of the will be observed, however, that eitherview of the case is sufficient to confirmthe views first enunciated by the Hunt-ers, that there is no commingling of thetwo systems. The accompanying illus-trations refer to the arrangement andstructure of the foetal Ultimate foetal villus, highly magnified. In , the cellular covering which coversthe villus is shown, except at its distalportion, where it has been removed toshow the looped vessels. It must be remembered that the oxygenation of the foetal blood isnot the only function of the placenta; but that through this channelalso, material is supplied for the building up of the foetal tissues, andeffete matter is removed. The observations of Goodsir on this point, which are of the greatest possible interest, are corroborative of the viewsof Reid. These will be noticed when we come to speak of the nutritionof the foetus. The formation of the placenta commences in the latter part of thesecond month, and within a few weeks it acquires its essential charac-teristics. Small bloodvessels, for the special nourishment of the organ, pass from the uterus; but neither nerves nor lymphatics have been, asyet, satisfact
