Crohn's disease. Coloured barium meal X-ray of the terminal region of the ileum (final part of the small intestine) in a case of fibrostenotic Crohn's disease (regional enteritis). Crohn's disease causes inflammation, thickening, and ulceration of the intestinal tract. Its cause is unknown. Symptoms include abdominal pain, diarrhoea and weight loss. The fibrostenotic form of the disease is where persistent inflammation causes scarring in the intestines, and the build up of scar tissue causes narrowing of the intestine itself. This is seen in the narrowed (stenotic) region of the intestines at centre right. The healthy parts of the intestines are the wider darker pouches.
