The curette should now be applied unsparingly, but byquick tractions of the instrument, care being observed to avoid that de-gree of pressure which might have a gouging effect, and thus provoketroublesome haemorrhage or injure comparatively healthy structures inan unnecessary and very undesirable manner. The diverging vulsellumshould now be passed into the uterine cavitj^ proper, and by firm trac-tion the concave stump may be made more or less convex, and the opera-tion of excision proceeded with as in the beginning, care being taken tokeep within safe anatomical bounds. Finally, the excavation is to beswabbed out, the dome-shaped instrument (Fig. 11) freely applied,. Fig. 24. especially to the extreme upper part or bottom of the cavity, and aproperly-formed tampon of suitable size, saturated with the antisepticastringent solution (page 23), introduced and supported with one of dryantiseptic cotton in the vagina. These should be allowed to remain forfort3-eight hours, when they may be removed carefully and replaced b^^others, but saturated with a solution one-half the strength of that usedin the first instance. On the removal of the tampons at the expiration ofthe fourth or fifth day, the case will take care of itself, and nothing moreneed be done than syringing the parts with a 3- or 4-per-cent. solutionof carbolic acid twice a day.
