Helmut Josef Michael Kohl (born 3 April 3 1930) German conservative politician and statesman. He was Chancellor of Germany from 1982 to 1998 (of West Germany alone between 1982 and 1990) and the chairman of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) from 1973 to 1998. His 16-year tenure was the longest of any German chancellor since Otto von Bismarck.
