Album of Painting and Calligraphy for Maoshu 1666–80 Various artists This album, assembled over more than a decade by a collector referred to by his sobriquet Maoshu, contains paintings and calligraphic writings by twenty-four contributors. The disparate sizes of the leaves suggest that many were collected individually and only subsequently assembled into a single album. Thus, the album was not a unified work done for a specific occasion but rather the gradual creation of the collector. The album may be seen as a record of one man’s collecting practices during the middle of the seventeenth album includes at least five artists active in Nanjing and an equal number from towns around Hangzhou: Shaoxing, Pinghu, Jiaxing, and Huating. While all the calligraphies mention Maoshu by name, only a few of the paintings bear personal dedications, suggesting that they may have been acquired through transactions that did not require a dedication. The album folds down the middle; when open, there is a two-leaf spread visible. For the sake of clarity, artist information for the album is catalogued below rather than in the tombstone at the top of this document. The information proceeds from the right side of the first spread (Leaf A) to the left side of the first spread (Leaf AA) and so on through the Album of Painting and Calligraphy for Maoshu. Various artists , Chinese,17th century. China. 1666–80. Album of fourteen paintings and facing pages of calligraphy; ink and color on paper. Qing dynasty (1644–1911). Paintings
