Lochinvar, the hero of a ballad in the poem Marmion, rides off with Ellen just as she is about to be married to another.

Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) was a Scottish novelist and poet. Among his works is Marmion, an epic poem written in 1808 about the battle of Flodden. While not a bestseller, the stanzas in Canto V that told of the hero Lochinvar did become popular and were often recounted. Included in this section was the poem Lochinvar, a ballad sung by Lady Heron. Lochinvar is the hero of the ballad and he rides off with his love Ellen just as she is about to be married to another. This 1917 illustration shows Lochinvar about to take Ellen, dressed in her wedding dress, away with him.
