Y., where he was engagedin clerical duties from July, 1863, until .\pril, 1864. After returning to thelield he took part in the battles of the \\ ilderness, Po River and Spottsyl-vania, in all of which, his captain being detailed for field duty, he was incommand of the company, and in the last named lost his left arm, suffer-ing three amputations. He made application, on convalescence, to be per-mitted to return to the service, but was refused, owing to a general orderissued forbidding disabled officers to return to the front.
