Relations.—By its external surface with the vertebral column andits muscles, behind; with the vessels and nerves contained in themaxillo-pharyngeal space laterally, the middle constrictor, stylo-pha-ryngeus, and tensor palati muscle. By its internal surface with thelevator palati, palato-pharyngeus, tonsil, and mucous membrane ofthe pharynx, the pharyngeal fascia being interposed. The Stylo-pharyngeus is a long and slender muscle arising from 208 LEVATOR PAL ATI. Fig. 107/. the inner side of the base of the styloid process; it descends between the superior and middle constrictor mus-cles, and spreads out beneath the mucousmembrane of the pharynx, its inferiorfibres being inserted into the posteriorborder of the thyroid cartilage. Relations. — By its external surfacewith the stylo-glossus muscle, externalcarotid artery, parotid gland, and themiddle constrictor. By its internal sur-face with the internal carotid artery, internal jugular vein, superior constric-tor, palato-pharyngeus, and mucous mem-brane. Along its lower border is seenthe glossopharyngeal nerve which crossesit, opposite the root of the tongue, to passbetween the superior and middle con-strictor and behind the palato-phaiyngeus is describedwith the muscles of the soft palate. It arises from the soft palate, and is inserted into the inner surface of the pharynx, and posteriorborder of the thyroid cartilage. Actions.—The three
