Sandhill cranes feeding and dancing in the San Luis valley of Colorado

During the spring migration in the San Luis valley of Colorado, sandhill cranes (Antigone canadensis) can be found by the thousands, feeding, dancing, calling, flying and resting. The Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge is part of the San Luis Valley National Wildlife Refuge Complex found near Alamosa, Colorado. Here, you'll find actively managed wetlands, grain fields and riparian corridors and other habitats designed to encourage migratory birds and wildlife to make this arid locale a stopping point or a permanent home.
