In the year 1849 Mr. Petersenvisited Norway on an evangelical tour;and, in the face of much opposition andcontemptuous interference from the StateChurch, he succeeded in making manyconverts. From 1853, when he was ap-pointed missionary, until 1856, heworked alone. Sarpsdorg, Fredericks-hald, and Christiania, the last-mentionedin 1861, were occupied in turn. In 1876Bishop Andrews formed the mission intoan Annual Conference, the membersnumbering nearly three thousand, whocontributed out of their scanty meansfifteen hundred dollars annually to aidin the work. In the year 1865 Mr. Cederholm, oneof the Norwegian missionaries, crossedover into Gottland, an island in theBaltic belonging to Sweden. In the.
