Buffer preparation. Researcher preparing a buffer solution. A buffer solution is a solution containing either a weak acid and its conjugate base, or a weak base and its conjugate acid. This combination means that a buffer is able to resist small changes in pH when small amounts of acid or base are added to it. Buffer solutions are used as a means of keeping pH at a nearly constant value in a wide variety of chemical applications.
