Still, for all that he had suffered, he wasforgiving and generous to his opponents, and he rarelyabused a victory. He ruled the kingdom with muchsagacity and wisdom, and enrolled the humblest classof the people in his army. He was kind and liberalto the poor and helpless, and withal one of naturesnoblest sons. He died on the 7th of June, 1329, atCardross, on the northern shore of the Firth of Clyde,and was buried in the choir of the abbey of Dunferm-line. A marble monument was placed over hisgrave ; but he left a nobler monument—an enduringimpression on the hearts of the people and in thememory of succeeding
