Shanghai was the specified port to allow commerce based on the Treaty of Nanking, the port opened in 1843. Pictured was Shanghai in 1850. The Treaty of Nanking was a peace treaty that ended the First Opium War between the United Kingdom and Qing Dynasty in China in 1842 in the wake of China's defeat.
