CABBAGE BUTTERFLIES —Large White, Pieris brassicm, White, Pieris rupee, Linn. Green-veined White,Pieris napi, Pieris brassicm.—1, female butterfly; 2, eggs ; 3, caterpillar; 4, chrysalis. The past season, and also the summer of the preceding year (1898),have both been noticeable for the great prevalence of Cabbage butter-flies in various localities. In 1898 the devastation of the caterpillarsin some places completely ruined the Cabbage crops. The leaves wereeaten to mere shreds, consisting of only the mid-rib and some amountof side veins; and even if the plants were not killed, such growth asthe remnants of life left in them enabled them to make was delayed B 2 CABBAGE. [1899 till so late in the year that it was too weak to be of much service, andthe result was great loss to market gardeners, and much inconvenienceto householders from non-supply of such a convenient vegetable in itsusual plenty and luxuriance.
