Lake Hoton Nuur is situated in the west part of the Altai Mountains near the border between Mongolia and China. It is glacial lake with pure and fresh water. Its altitude is 2,084 meters. Its length is 21 km, width – 6 km, maximum depth – 58 meters. 10 rivers flow into the lake. The Sargaal Channel connects Lake Hoton Nuur with Lake Hurgan (Khurgan) Nuur. Thouse lakes give the source to the largest river of Mongolian Altai – the Khovd (Hovd, Kobdo) River. In the Ice Age those lakes were the one huge water reservoir. On the right bank of Lake Hoton Nuur situated the last and the biggest relic larch tree forest of the Mongolian Altai. There are a lot of archaeological monuments on the banks of Hoton Nuur and Hurgan Nuur. They are the pethroglyphs or rock drawings, ancient stone figurines of Turkic warriors, burial mounds and kereksurs.
