Hard work in discharging his patriotic duties, the change in the way of living and the less favorable climate told badly on his health, specially on his lungs, and he was sent back on a six months' leave last fall. He spent the winter under the genial climate of the south of France and his strong constitution aid- ing, we had hopes, that he would en- tirely recover. In fact, he came back last spring to his home at Verrieres, near Paris, much improved and glad to be able to return to his collections of plants and garden- ing treasures. On the day of his death he was as well as possible and after lunch went to Paris and paid a visit to the secretary of commerce, who had sent for him. He returned to Verrieres at about 7 p. m. and spent the evening quietly with his family. Between 10 and 11 at the moment of going to rest, he felt unwell and quickly afterwards collapsed in the arms of Mrs. Vilmorin. It is an old saying that "a shared joy is a double joy and a shared sorrow is only half a ; If there could therefore be any consolation for a stricken family and firm under such a terrible bereavement. It would be' in the assurance that their affliction is seven children and had succeeded him as head of the firm.
