Eurydice, while fleeing from Aristaeus, is killed by snake. unknown c. 1675-1700 Tapestry Dimensions: H 8'6" x W 9'1" Tapestry Materials/Techniques: unknown Culture: Flemish Weaving Center: Brussels Ownership History: French & Co. purchased from Morris Fatman, invoiced 3/17/1936. (L panel), in forest, Eurydice, seen with arm extended, is bitten on foot by snake; (R panel), nymphs surround central scene, some relax next to fountain (BRD) scrolling acanthus motif framed by bead-&-reel molding, acanthus leaves in corners 2 panels which originally formed 1 tapestry. The right border & adjacent 1/5s of the top & bottom borders are rewoven; the left border has been sewn at the top. Therefore, the border, & probably the field with it, were taller & extended further to the right. Given these conditions, as well as the continuation of the same subject in GCPA: 0237925:0237926, it seems clear that these 2 tapestries once formed the left [GCPA 0237923:0237924] & right [GCPA 0237925:0237926] halves of a single tapestry. The entire composition appears in a later, wider, taller tapestry [GCPA 0237919:0237922] (Cavallo). Stock sheet states that tapestry was cleaned, 5/29/1940 (Dimitrova).
