Abandoned builidings in the Old Port of Trieste, Friuli-Venezia-Giulia, Italy: black and white version

The area of the Old Port of Trieste is now largely abandoned and decaying. While a few of the buildings, acknowledged as being some of the most important examples of maritime industrial archaeology in the Mediterranean, are being renovated, the majority are still slowly mouldering away. Here, Warehouse 21, built between 1883 and 1893, is equipped with cranes, elevators, davits and other machinery for loading and unloading goods, and has in addition a platform that has a height of about 1 meter, designed for operations from railway wagons or motor vehicles. The buildings so far renovated are the nearby monumental Warehouse 26, and two of the best examples of industrial-port archaeology: the hydrodynamics plant and the building of the electrical substation, still today housing the 19th century energy-generating machines, preserved in their entirety in the original buildings.
