Returning to the old fort, we find at the south-west corner, just outside of the barracks, the sur-face broken and thrown up into grassy mounds, marking the positionof one of the threeunderground roomswhich existed at thetime Amherst tookpossession of thefort; the second isfound in a similarcondition to the first,at the north-westcorner; the door andentrance from thecellar of the officersquarters being quitewell preserved along thehollow that seems tomark the course of. THE BARRACK WINDOW, an underground passage to the north-east corner,you stand over the third, which is one of the bestpreserved portions of the ruins. To enter 3^ouclimb down into the cellar, now nearlv filled withbroken stones and overrun with vines, and, stoop-ing low, make your way through the openingbefore you. The r^lAGAZixE. 57
