Zoological illustrations, or, Original figures and descriptions of new, rare, or interesting animals, selected chiefly from the classes of ornithology, entomology, and conchology, and arranged according to their apparent affinities . he charac-ters proposed in that valuable work for the genus nature has employed this beautiful device to indi-cate the group which next succeeds in her series, or whethershe has intended it to point out a strong analogy, are ques-tions which, in our present imperfect knowledge of Lepi-dopterous groups, cannot be answered. Of this group we possess several new and highly in-teresting species. It is worthy of remark, that they wereall collected in one particular locality, and at the sameseason. This was during a short residence at Mandioca, the plantation of Dr. Langsdorff, among the woods at thebase of the Organ mountains, near Rio de Janeiro. We believe this group is restricted to tropical America, where it probably represents the genuine Pieres, (as definedat pi. 69,) of the Old World. The present species is sub-ject to much variation in the size, proportion, and colour ofits spots : the white is sometimes pale yellow, and the rosybecomes of a deeper and brighter hue. 1 p.
