The Sir Ernest Shackleton, a replica of the James Caird, one of Shackleton's lifeboats, at The Polar Museum in Cambridge, UK. This is a copy of the lifebboat which had been hauled across Antarctica and in which Shackleton togeter with Worsley, Crean, McNeish, McCarthy and Vincent and sailed 800 miles to South Georgia to seek rescue for his men left trapped on Elephant Island. This replica, built in 1993 at McNulty's shipyard, Tyneside, from American yellow cedar is metres wide and metres long and weighs one tonne. From December 1993 to January 1994 Shackleton's boat voayage was re-enacted by four adventurers led by led by Trevor Potts witrh Robert Egelstaff, Chris Smith, and Victoria Brown. they carried no engine, life raft, or emergency radio beacon. During their 14 days at sea they survived four gales. The original James Caird is on display at Dulwich College in south London.
