The territory consists of Alsace-Lor-raine, the Palatinate, the Rhine province,Birkenfeld, and about one-third of Hesse. The Rhine province is the largest ofthese districts. Its area is 10,423 squaremiles and the census of 1910 gave its popu-lation as 5,759,000.
