Such a dike would close two of theleast used channels, but would increase thenatural scour of the Main and Swash channelsand would presumably deepen them to thirtyfeet at mean low water. The appropriation, however, was specifi-cally for the deepening of Gedneys channel, wheels near the deck. The scoop is loweredto the bottom, where it runs on wheels. Thesteel connecting pipe contains a ball-and-socketjoint, and includes also a short length of heavyIndia-rubber pipe re-enforced with steel bands,in order to prevent breakage when the vesselis rolling or pitching in a seaway. By meansof a steam jet connected with the top of thecentrifugal pump, a vacuum is produced withinthe pump and pipe, under the effects of whichvacuum water rises through the pipes untilthe pump-chamber is completely filled. Then,on starting the pump and opening the outlet. Fig. 6.—Boat at Work Deepening Channel in New York Harbor, with Drawings op Dredges. and hydraulic excavators were employed, whichworked by means of centrifugal pumps anddeepened the channel two feet over a widthof feet. In 1886 a further appropriationof $750,000 was granted for the general im-provement of the harbor, and as this was in-sufficient for the proposed dike it was decidedto continue dredging operations. The contract was awarded to the JosephEdwards Dredging Company. The vessels em-ployed under this system are propellers, fittedwith centrifugal pumps and dredging vessel is divided by bulkheads into tanksfor the reception of the dredged material. Inthe bottom of the tanks are valves operated by valve hitherto closed, i
