Austin and Pickersgill Shipbuilders was formed in Sunderland in 1954 by the merger of Austin and Sons Ltd, founded around 1826, and William Pickersgill and Sons Ltd, founded around 1838. After the merger, Austin's Wear Dock Yard was used for repairs, while shipbuilding was concentrated at Pickersgill's Southwick Yard (right foreground). In 1977, after much modernisation, Austin and Pickersgill was nationalised as a member company of British Shipbuilders. In 1986 it merged with Sunderland Shipbuilders, across the Wear, at Pallion (background view). to form North East Shipbuilders. Government funding was withdrawn, however, in 1988 and both the Pallion and Southwick Yards closed with the loss of some 6000 jobs. The bulk carrier, Lynton Grange, is seen here, in the summer of 1976, being fitted out at Austin and Pickersgill's Southwick Yard. The Lynton Grange was launched from the yard 14 May 1976 and completed 25 August 1976. The bulk carrier was 183 metres long, with a beam of metres. The ship was built for the Houlkder Line, many of whose ships had names ending in 'Grange'. The ship was sold to Panama in 1982 and re-named 'Northern Cherry'. It was broken up at Alang, India, in 2000. In 1976 Sunderland Shipbuilders built a new, enclosed, all-weather yard at Pallion, which could build two ships, up to 30,000 tonnes deadweight, side-by-side. The steel came in one end and the ships launched from the other. The ship being fitted out at the Pallion Yard is the Cedarbank, an 11,282 tonnes general cargo ship, launched 26 May 1976 and completed 28 June 1976, and broken-up, at Alang, India, in 1999.
