He then assumed charge ofthe erection of engines in the vessels which were fittedout by the Fulton Iron-Works of James Murphy &Co., New York, remaining in that position severalyears. The civil war being then in progress, he hadcharge of all the outside work of that firm, includingthe fitting out of government vessels. Itwas here he first became acquainted with the manu-facture of tubing, having built the machinery for theBergen Tube-Mill of New Jersey. In 1869 he enteredinto an arrangement with parties, afterwards incor-porated as the National Tube-Works Company, toerect works for them in East Boston, Mass., and sub-sequently acted as superintendent of the works until1872, when it was decided to erect a more extensiveestablishment at McKeesport, Pa. Mr. Mathesontook entire charge of the projected works, and theywere built under his management.
