Heavy necklac worn by the women of the Gadaba India


Orissa is home to India's ancient civilization and most of it is concentrated around the Eastern Ghat hill ranges in the region of Koraput and Mayurbahanja of Western Orissa In Orissa one out of every four persons is an Adivasi or Tribal. The most primitive tribes are Bondas, Gadabas, and Kondhas. The culture of tribal Orissa is rich with their folk songs and dances, The Orissan tribes normally like to maintain distance from the people of other communities,. Women wrap long stretch of cloth around them and are adorned with ornaments like bangles, armlets, bracelets, necklaces, rings, hairpins etc usually made of silver, aluminum, and brass. The practice of tattooing is prevalent among women The colourful Godaba, or Gadaba, tribal women wear huge Neck rings which are about 500-700 gms each & can not be removed without the help of the Blacksmith. As a part of their tradition, it is only removed after their death.
