Bikers happy to roar into action to help our heroes MOTORBIKE enthusiasts roared into action for charity with the help of a host of celebrities. Around 500 people got on their bikes for Cumbria Charity Bike Ride yesterday, in aid of Help for Heroes. The event, which ventured from Bowness to Cockermouth, featured a number of stars, including Coronation Street actors Simon Gregson and Peter Armitage, who play Steve McDonald and Bill Webster in the soap. Former Catchphrase presenter Roy Walker was also on his bike, as was injured British Superbike rider James Ellison, of Kendal, and stunt rider Dave Coates. Lesley Fursey, 38, chairwoman of the event, and a member of Millom Bike Group and Morecambe Bay Estuary Advanced Motorcyclists, said the organisers were stunned by the success. Peter Armitage (born 1937) is an English television actor who trained at the East 15 Acting School. He has been a regular on British screens since the 1970s. He is currently in his third spell as the character Bill Webster on long-running soap opera Coronation Street, having first appeared as the character in 1984. He is also fondly remembered for appearing in a Yellow Pages advert in the 1980s as a Dad trying to convince his son not to have a racing bike as a birthday present. The advert ends with Armitage saying the line "I was right about that saddle though!". Peter is a keen Motorcyclist and is often seen riding his bike through the Lake District.
