The other ten spies, whose discouragements had formed the proximate cause of theinsurrection, were smitten by some sudden death, in which the people recognised a punishmentfrom God. The people were thus made sensible of the folly of their past conduct. But this con-viction had not, in the first instance, any salutary operation.
