Skin. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of skin on the tip of a human finger. The hole at centre is a sweat pore, an opening of a sweat gland onto the skin. Dead cells are seen flaking away from the surface of the epidermis, the skin's thin outer layer. They are continuously replaced with living cells, produced from the innermost part of the epidermis. Most epidermal cells produce large amounts of keratin, a tough, fibrous protein. Magnification: x820 at 6x7cm size. x1300 at 4x5ins
